258 Flywheel removal tips

So, I got the transmission and clutch removed and would like to take the flywheel in to get ground smooth. I can't seem to get it off. I don't have a compressor (all hand tools at this point). When I turn the flywheel bolt, the motor turns over. I have tried everything I can think of to hold it still while I remove these bolts. I would have assumed there was a tool for this, but can't locate one...

Any advice please???

Try some WD40 or what ever the US equivalent is is some heat, the put a spanner on the nut, hold the flywheel with on hand and hit the end of the spanner with a hammer . Or lodge a screwdiver between the fly wheel teeth and the floor to stop it turning.

Did anyone else ever use one of the flywheel holder tools like I did? It has a loop to grab a tooth and then you hold a shaft with a point on the end in another tooth and it holds great. One of my buddies owns it, it works wonders in this situation. Sorry for the crap explinaton, but it seems like it would be a cheap tool and is extremely usefull.

I used a prybar and small piece of chain to hold the flywheel. Use a thin piece of chain with large links and put a clutch cover bolt through one link at one end and hand tighten it into the flywheel (normal clutch cover threaded hole). Wrap the chain about one third way around the flywheel on the teeth. Attach the other end to your prybar (I used a flat prybar with a hole through it) with a bolt. Stick the end of the prybar in the teeth of the flywheel and you can now hold the flywheel from turning. Depending on whether you are tightening or loosening the flywheel bolts will determine which direction to wrap the chain.

I had to do this not too long ago. I tried every method of wedging anything I could find in there and nothing helped. What I ended up doing was getting a wrench and putting it on the crank pulley on the front of the motor. Then I sprun the motor over by hand with the wrench connected to the crank untill the wrench sat against the fan. Then you just go back underneath and loosen the flywheel bolts. The wrench on the crank pulley will sit against the fan and keep the motor from turning over. This is the easiest method I have found so far. Good luck.

Put a boxed end wrench on the bolts and hit it repeatedly with a hammer.. cheap man's impact wrench... seriously.

I just broke down a CJ w/ 258 and this is how me and a buddy did it. Worked great!
