We are at the tail end of our 1978 CJ-5 rebuild. The dip stick tube broke, and we are trying to seat the new aluminum dip stick tube with a flared fitting.

We have pulled the oil pan, used dry ice to freeze the tube (shrink), and a bernzomatic to heat the block (expand). Pulling with pliers underneath, and tapping with an open wrench from above as the block has a flat section stopping a closed wrench from tapping it in. We still cannot get the tube to seat.

Has anyone has luck with this?

When I disassembled my 5.2L ZJ engine, of course I snapped the unobtainium dipstick tube.

My solution was to purchase a short segment of matching OD steel tubing and have a friend weld it onto the existing part.

Installation required some sanding of circumference to get it to fit.
