2.4l engine died on the highway... ignition problems?

Hey guys,

I'm in it deep here.
First off, I'm stationed in Germany, pretty stoked that I was taking my jeep to Iceland this summer... till tonight.

I have a 2.4l jeep... i know, but it has taken me to places. 60,000 mi on the odo and the thing was running strong!

I was driving home from work, tired, hoping to just eat something and sleep. 1km from the house, my 2.4l engine just completely shuts off, oil pressure drops like a rock!

I pop the hood, no leaks, oil level is a little low, but still fine, coolant is fine, nothing dripping from underneath the jeep...

try to turn the engine, starter works fine, but you can't hear any ignition. Then from where the ignition coil is, it starts smoking a little.

An engine code popped up yesterday saying misfire in cyl #1. cleared that and ordered new wires...I had to get it towed back here for that last km.

Anyone else experience anything like this? It has been having trouble when I switch the AC on (rough idle on low RPMs, when it is driving, it goes fine), but when the AC is off, the jeep runs great.

You can pull up your fault codes using the "key trick". Within five seconds and without going to START, turn your ignition ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON and leave it ON at the end... after a second or two your Jeep will display some numbers on the odometer, write those down and post them up here.

I would also make sure the timing belt didn't break...mine went at around 95k. Report back with what you find...there's not too many things that will stop your engine dead.
Good call. When I had a 4 banger I was doing 70 mph and it just cut off like I was out of gas.Belt broke.

I just opened the timing belt cover. FANTASTIC.
Thanks guys, you are diagnostic geniuses! I think it came from a faulty AC compressor shaking the engine hard the other day. i guess the belt started slipping and flopped. What sucks is that we don't have autozone in every corner here in Germany, so I guess I'll have to call the off-road shop near me to see what they can do...

I am at me wits end. My mothers jeep had the exact same thing happen. SHe had the timing belt replaced. The shop screwed it up and she brought it back and it was a tooth off. They fixed that and it still has the P0016 code. Even after a new crank and camshaft sensor.

What else can it be? She is bringing the Jeep to me this weekend so I can have a look. What should I be looking for? Thanks in advance,.

had the same problem, pray the belt just broke alone, this is an interference engine.

Yup. I made a decision to pull the timing covers. Lined up the crank to TDC and the exhaust cam was off by about 1 1/2 teeth. The place she took it to were hacks. They drilled a cover into the aluminum timing cover, and bent the harmonic balancer.

I removed the belt and reset the timing, allowing some extra timing on the exhaust side for the tension to take that up. Reset the tension on the idler and we had to overnight a harmonic balancer from the dealer.

Put it all together and it runs great!!!
