Cab heater lowers temp too much to warm cab.

I have an 85 CJ7, last fall/winter, it was getting cold and I had to figure out a heater fix. My stock duct work was ok, but I didnt have the time to try to figure it out. Stupid as it seems, I actually threw the stock heater parts away. :brickwall , I know, I know. Anyway, I bought off JCWhittney the DanHard heater, and it installed great. last winter it kept the windshield clear but I froze on long trips, it just wasnt keeping it warm in the cab. Last winter I had to do a complete head removal and gasket repair before all of this heater issue, so I threw in a new thermostat at the time because they were cheap, why not right? Anyway, I got a 192 temp stock thermostat and it seems to work fine. So, its not the thermo, not the head leaking, no problems with the coolant lines, all until I turn the heater on and it blows out hot air for the first 3 minutes then cools off the coolant and drops the heat from 192 to 180, not too hot, lukewarm air to warm the cab. So, my question is... How do I fix this problem of no sustainable hot air? I put some cardboard in front of the grill, about 2/3rds of the way up the radiator to keep some of the cool air when driving off of the radiator. Nothing seems to keep the temp up when the heater is on. I need help!

I took the radiator cap off, started it and ran it until the thermo opened up and started pushing the coolant through the system. I did pick up the heater line and propped it up for a few minutes with a 2x4. I did this for about 15 minutes, jeep still runs cold. I cant figure out how to get more heat out of it. Just tired of being cold. If anyone in the Cleveland area has a 258 CJ that rocks the heat I would love to check it out.

Maybe not what you want to hear, but....Find a stock heater and upgrade the blower motor. It will cook you right out of the cab.

Just did this, and my impression is that setting 2 is a lot like setting 3 with the old motor. Setting 3 is a lot like driving with the top off in the summer - I have to turn the radio up because I can't hear anything. Does it heat well? Hard to say, but it's been in the 30's out here, I've got a soft top, and it's way warmer than I remember my old YJ being given the same conditions.

Im thinking some kind of blockage, maybe just partial. If it were me, I would unhook both lines at the block, then flow water thru the system with a garden hose, into to a 5 gallon bucket to catch any debris. Flow water both ways. See if anything comes out.

On edit, when you say drops from 192 to 180 I assume you are reading that from the gauge, or are you using a thermometer. I would think 12 degrees would be hard to feel. 180 degrees is still pretty warm.

I got a 198* thermostat in my CJ, the heater output is around 180* so if his heater also has a 18* drop then yeah, 162* will feel lukewarm also.

If the heater was dropping the engine temp 12*, well, the heat has to go someplace, so it should be blasting out the heater core.

This is going to take some thinking....
1. heater off, engine heats up to 190*...
2. Heater on, engine drops to 180*...
3. little heat coming from heater...

Still thinking there is a lot of air in the system or something blowing air into system. Air in heater core lowers heat output. Air trapped around sending unit lower apparent temp reading in engine.

Like Lucdog says,Need to use a thermometer in radiator to verify system temperature.
