Converting a 2006 TJ rubicon from standard to an automatic

Hello ,

I have been wanting to convert my 6 speed 2006 rubicon I6 to an automatic for some time , I had a GM tranny scrounged up but when I got deeper into it all the adapter plates turned me away , and other stuff came up so it was all back burnered .

Now I have found a 2000 Tj with the I6 and its an auto , would it be a big job or a possible job to swap in the auto from the 2000 into the 2006 standard .

I can't use the 2000 body cause its just a donor no axels , glass missing and lots rust and damage , but its complete electrically and drive train less the axels .

Side note while in there can I up grade to Tcase (232 ?)so its sort of as strong as the rubicon tcase (242 ?), reason being the rubicon tcase is geared somewhat to low for the type of terrain I see mostly like soft sand and soft hills , I prefer the extra wheel spin in 4lo .

The 4.0's block mounting bosses for mounting the engine and accessories like power steering pump, alternator, a/c, etc. are in different locations between the 00 and 06, it wouldn't be easy getting it all working. And I can't imagine getting everything including the instrument cluster working properly, especially since the TJ's databus changed from CCD to PCI in 2001. Due to those potential problems I know I sure wouldn't try it. I do love that 32RH in the 00 though, it sure would be nice to run it, I converted my previous TJ to one, but...

05-06 are harder because they changed computer and tone ring and crank sensor to work with NGC computer

if you could get an older non pcm controlled 3 speed auto or the AW4 with stand alone TCM to work with the NGC flexplate and crank sensor it would be doable but still not an easy task

guy was attempting it here with relocating the tone ring to the harmonic balancer but ultimately he gave up

You camnot use that 32rh, or whatever the auto trans is in the older jeep without way to much work.

And the 42rle is not the greatest transmission but you are basically stuck unless you want adapter plates.

Sorry so slow to respond but I had a bit of a family emergency that took up my time ,

from the posts above I'm getting that the 00 has a 32RH in it , is this tranny computer contrlled ?

will the flex plate and Torque converter bolt up to my 06 block ?

is the 32RH and the 6 speed the same length ? and will it bolt up to my 06 rubicon T case ?

will I need a special/different cross member to mount that 32RH into my 06 ?

enough questions for yet

The 00 is a 32rh is computer conteolled and will bolt up with torque converter and flex plate.

No idea on the other stuff

if you want auto, i wonder if you can get a tf999 out of an earlier yj and use that. its not electronic and bolts to your engine. my 87 yj had one with a stroker and that was a solid transmission

I can't believe no one has asked WHY? I see people converting the other way all the time, but not this way. Why would you want to get rid of the much simpler manual trans? Maybe I am missing something....

Many convert to automatics, especially us rock crawlers. I converted my previous TJ from its OE 5-speed to the 32RH automatic and it was right up there with front and rear lockers for the offroad benefits both bring to hard core wheeling. Go to the King of the Hammers, the toughest rock crawling race in the US, and you'll find that 99% of the upper classes like 4600 run automatics.

I would say that is a fair reason - certainly can't argue. Wishing you all the best with (and without) the Jeep!

If you were closer to south texas, we would swap straight across from our 03 tj. My son wants the standard for it but we are about 3 hours from the bottom of texas and you are north of minnesota
