My lug nuts on the rear wheels are. Different size to the front. Is this normal?

A common cause is that the OEM nuts had a chrome "cover" over them. Over time they would come loose and fall off leaving the lug nut a smaller size. Cheesy, but true.

I was wondering where this thread was going. I had that same problem with the stock lugs. I ended up replacing them all with fully enclosed ones.

 

The threads on the lug studs themselves should be 1/2" on a stock axle. Are they stock or aftermarket lug nuts?

Stock lug nuts
The stock ones have an aluminum "cover" that sometimes falls off. The standard socket size is 3/4" (also 19MM) for stock lug nuts. If the cover has fallen off, usually an 18MM socket will work to remove them.

Aftermarket lug nuts
Lug nuts can be purchased that are 1/2" thread, but are available in 3/4" and 13/16" socket sizes. Somebody probably just got the wrong socket sized replacement lug nuts.

If it were me, I would replace them with the 3/4" (19MM) socket size lug nuts.

It is normal for them to become different sizes as they age.

For lug nuts - anytime I get a vehicle that has those silly stamped covers over the nuts, they get replaced inside of a month. Period. That's just one headache I don't need...

Anytime your at the junkyard & find a vehicle like yours, look on the ground near where the wheels were for lug nuts. Usually wont charge you for them if your getting something else. Then when the covers fall off you just replace them for free.

 

They all look the same to me. Acorn style like this: (ignore the 7/16)

If the cover fell off would it still look like a chrome acorn nut?

 

My guess is that this was your P.O.'s answer(or tire shop's) to replacing the O.E. nuts whose stamped cover came off. I would just replace them all with the same size so you don't have to bother with two different sized lug wrenches.

 

I had the same problem from the PO mismatching the lug nuts. Ended up going to the local parts store and getting a 1/2 by 20 acorn style lug set to replace them with. The original lug set had the keyed lock nuts that were stripped out and a PITA to get off. If you want the locking lugs its fine, but those funky internal keyed lugs can strip out pretty easy so would go with the external splined ones, just my .02.

I figured someone had replaced the rearend and it had different sized lugs (thread size)
