Engine Swap 401 V8

I blew up my 360 V8 Memorial Weekend coming home from the Rubicon in my 1985 CJ 7. Threw a connecting rod out of the oil pan doing 70mph down I80. So the last two months I was kind of over my jeep and just yanked the engine out and let it sit. Now I have caught the bug again and picked up a 77 Wagoneer that had an AMC 401 V8 in it. The engine is most likely tired and will last as long as the other junker I swapped in. Money is tight and this is pretty much the only route I could afford to get me back on the road. The jeep isnt a daily driver so it should be fine for the time being.

Engine pics prior to being yanked. Damn engine was disgusting. The engine and drive train had a nice coating of oil, grease and whatever else. Looks like at some point somebody swapped in a 4 barrel manifold and did a piss poor job of sealing it back up.

Pulled her out of the shop to lift the engine out. Sure is nice to have a tractor on hand.

Almost rolled the tractor on its side in the drive way right before this pic due to a low front tire.:eek:

Started tearing it down tonight.

Plans are to just clean it up, redo all the gaskets from the valley pan up, swap the 2 barrel manifold and carb from the blown engine along with the dui distributor ,flow cool water pump and the 140 watt alternator. Then I will get her painted up and toss her in for some abuse.:D

It's hard to tell for sure from the picture of the 401, but it looks like the PO removed the radiator fan clutch and replaced it with a spacer. He might have done that because he used the donor vehicle for towing. But, in a CJ, it's not necessary, and you might consider installing a fan clutch again.

Possibly. Not sure if I was gonna ditch the crappy Hedeman Headers and go with the stock mainifolds. Let me think her over bud.

Quick question. The flywheel off my 360 should swap right onto the 401 right? I noticed the mounting surface was somewhat different. The 401 has a little flange that the 360 doesnt.

Also, wheres a good place to get a pilot bushing as I dont think I will be able to remove the one on the 360, and not sure that they are the same anyways as I dont have a micrometer.

Damn that sucks. Is there any difference in the flywheels when using an automatic transmission or a manual transmission? I have the flywheel that came with the 401 that mated to the torque converter, could I use that and put on my clutch I was using for the 360 flywheel that mates to the ford t-18 manual transmission Im running?


Also, can you guys explain to me what you mean by externally balanced and whats the harmonic?

Externally balanced means the flywheel is weighted to balance the motor and the front has a harmonic balancer. The harmonic is the balancer on the front of the motor behind the crank pulley. The fly wheel or flexplates are motor specific as in 401/360/304/ and as long as the 401 had the same tranny behind it you can use it. If not all the auto part stores can get a flexplate if you can tell them what motor and tranny combo.

Thanks for the help again. Im just wanting to make sure I get all the facts straight. So I will not be able to use the clutch that was on the 360 flywheel with that of the 401 flywheel?

Thanks again for all the input. When I did the 360 swap I had my friend to help me and guide me on the swap along with this forum. This time Im on my own swapping the engine as he is an hour away so Im relying on you guys to keep me in the right direction.

You can use the clutch, assuming it's in good condition. Now's the time to replace it, if it's at all, questionable. You must use a 401 specific flywheel with your T-18, the flexplate is not the same thing and will not work with a stick shift. The flex plate should be specific to a T400/350.

You will need a 401 flywheel for a manual tranny. The flexplates for automatics are much much thinner. you should however be able to use the same clutch. Be sure to check the throwout bearing, and clutch discs for wear. i don't know if you replaced them with the last swap, but if not, it would be a good time while the motor is already out.

Thanks John and jp360cj. I forgot about the thickness being different between the autos and the manuals.

The clutch was brand new when I did the 360 swap a year and a half ago and it didnt get tons of mileage on it as the jeep is just for wheelin.

One more thing that just popped up while out in the garage looking over the engine. Im missing one of the dowel male things on the back on the engine block that mates into the transmission from the engine block. I have both on the 360 and am wondering how to get one removed so I can put it into the 401 block. Its the round hollow cylinder deal. Pic for reference below.

How does one remove it? Can I punch it out from the little hole in the front or should some vice grips get it out? Or can I buy one somewhere? Couldnt find anything on any of the engine parts websites.

I had the same problem and used vice grips. just a couple twists and it came right out. then used a rubber hammer to put it in the other motor
