Front Driveshaft Removal

Hi All,
I have a 2005 Jeep GC Laredo AWD. I have a vibration in which I think is the CV joint at the transfer case. I removed the driveshaft (found the CV joint is loose) to hopefully drive it and see if the vibration is gone. However, when I removed it, the Jeep doesn’t go anywhere and acts as if its in neutral when in fact its in drive. I used to have a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee AWD and I took the front driveshaft off of it and it still drove normally. Is there a difference between the two? If not, Im thinking I have no rear wheel drive and its only powering the front wheels. So does a 2005 GC need the front driveshaft in order to drive? The 1995 GC didn’t.
Thanks

Yes it does. It is a quadra trac 1 with no low range...
Or a quadra trac 2 , or a quadra drive.

In 1995 if you had quadratrac it would have had the low range option. That is the only difference however in low range it locks in 50/50.

You probably had select trac in 1995 which had a quadra trac like selection in the Full time shift selection. It was 52% rear axle and 48% front enabling it to drive with no binding. Just like quadratrac. However you could run that in 2high and hence you could have ran it wjth no front driveshaft

Good luck.

BTW
If your getting a rattle your cv on that shaft is bad. Crawl under abd grab hold. Move it all around. Twisting it...fast...back and forth. Like a cycle throttle motion. That is definitely one of the things you can replicate a noise.
Good luck.

Which transfer case do you have? Is there a switch/lever for "4 Low" in yours? And possibly Neutral (transfer case neutral, not to be confused with neutral for the transmission)?
Thanks for the reply. I do not have a lever. I'm at the mercy of the AWD and I can't change anything myself.

Ok Thanks for the info. Also, I already removed the front driveshaft and the CV joint is loose. I did try to turn it and move it around while it was still attached but it didn't do much moving except front to back about 3/16 inch. I had to take it off to see how bad the CV joint was. The boot is cut all the way around so there is dirt in there and it doesn't seem to have much more grease. It has 160K miles on it. So because I wasn't able to remove the driveshaft and drive it, I had to reinstall the old one. Its my wife's vehicle and she needs it to go to work and stuff. I ordered a rebuild kit from Rock Auto and it should be here in the middle of next week. I just hope nothing breaks before then since I had to put the old one back on. It is a pretty severe vibration. It almost feels like somebody is pressing the brakes just a bit as you can feel yourself move forward (just a little bit) while the vibration is occurring. I was hoping it would be the same as the 1995 Jeep I had before in which I could drive without the front driveshaft for a few days.
