I know jack squat about CB'S. I am looking at these three models. Can you tell me what one is better that the other.

COBRA 19 DX IV
https://www.cobra.com/detail/19-dx-iv-compact-cb-radio.cfm

I dont like the screen on the cobra BUT the rest sounds good ?

MIDLAND 1001 LWX
http://www.midlandradio.com/CB-Radio.WYQ/1001LWX

Again dont like the screen but it has sq and rf adjustments

UNIDEN PRO520XL
http://www.uniden.com/cb-radios/compact-professional-mobile-cb-radio/invt/pro520xlg/

Like the screen but look like its lacking in stuff?

Going to run a 3 foot fire stick off the rear bumper for a antenna if that helps

thanks:confused:

They are about the same, and will do exactly the same job. Weather is a nice added feature. Not having RF Gain or ANL would be the deciding factor for me. Screens or other type displays are not that important, you will be looking at where you are driving.

Thank you very much for responding. I think I will go with the uniden Pro520XL then.

You might wanna re-think this.....You need to have the tip above the roof line by several inches at least for best results. I Don't think a 3 ft antenna will accomplish that if you mount it to the bumper.

NEW RADIO IDEA

Well I been playing were I want to put the radio. I think a inch or two more wont matter so I am going full size. So I am looking on Ebay for a used or reman CB under 49 bucks and there's tons in the cobra, uniden and midland brand. So with that in mind any model suggestions? I just bought the Firestik side mount kit, Stainless steel heavy duty spring, Firestik II 4 foot antenna. I am going to mount the antenna above the taillight as close to the top of the tub as I can. I used a measuring tape and the antenna should go above the roof line by about a foot and a half or so.

Thanks I am looking at a Midland 5001z, Cobra 29 LTD Classic, Cobra 29 NW LTD, Cobra 29 WX NW ST, Cobra 29 LTD CHROME CHR and COBRA 25 LTD WX CLASSIC. Like I said before I dont know nothing about these things and the goodies on them mean nothing right now but might later. So any model better?

Thanks I am looking at a Midland 5001z
I put one of those in my gf's truck. The audio was barely a squeek so I opened it up and with help from CB tricks.com I turned the audio up. It was better but it lasted about 6 weeks and the audio fell off again.

It keys up but no sound. Therefore I do not recomend a 5001z. The new radios from China are not as good as the older ones from the Phillippines and Tiawan. These were the radio's that put Cobra and Uniden on the map.

Go to Fleabay and find yourself a Philli made Cobra or Uniden and you will be ahead of the game.

If you are using this for trail only, the smaller radios will do just fine. And a 3 ft firestick is long enough to transmit and receive just fine without sticking it in the trees. Four foot will be fine too but will catch trees. The bigger radios are nice but consider where you will be putting it. With out more investment in a mount the big radios are cumbersome.

Thanks for the tip on the Midland. I have a hard top, So I never have my top off.lol. Thanks for the Ebay link. I am mounting the CB under the glove box and to the left. So right up against the right side off the center consul.

The bigger the CB radio, the more passenger space it takes up. For the average CB user, added features are not needed, and only add to the cost and size of the radio. Any basic Uniden, Cobra or Midland CB will be fine. They all come with a warranty if there are any problems.

If you are going full sized and used anyway, look out for a Uniden Grant XL The thing rocks, and has a cult-like following. It has side band feature in case you get stranded out in the middle of nowhere you will jump up to about 15 watts to reach out in emergency to anyone else that may have side band as well. The PA feature also has a feature that will play regular transmissions through it in case you have to step out of the jeep on the trails you just switch over to PA and you can hear all radio traffic in case you need to. It has tons of other stuff too if you need to play with it.

Big Cobra and Uniden SSB CB radios are great and have extra lots of functions, buttons, and knobs. Too bad nobody else on the 4x4 trails has one, or will be able to tune in any 12 watt SSB emergency transmissions.

For a trail CB radio, stick with a basic little CB, with a low cost. You still can find them on CraigsList and at Garage sales for $5-20. You want a physically small CB that fits in a small space, doesn't attract thieves, and one that has low cost to replace if it gets wet.

New CB users, or 4x4 trail only users, have no need for extra features/functions or SSB.

He did say he wasn't going to remove the top. It doesn't matter though cause he still can with one of these. Big radio out of the way. Most of the trails I am on are well within reach of at least a couple towns where someone may be using SSB and be able to relay a message in emergency. Doesn't have to be someone in a jeep on the trail. I'm actually thinking of replacing my Grant XL with a Galaxy 959 to gain a frequency counter.

I just picked up a very clean uniden pc78 ltw. It was made in china not P.I or Taiwan, So bummer on that account. A old truck driver 2 towns over from me was getting rid of his gear on craigslist. He had a cobra 29 nw ltd classic and the uniden pc78 ltw. Both really clean and only for 40 each. I was told the uniden was better so I grabbed that one.
