Installing new tailgate - CJ7

My CJ did not come with a tailgate it didn't even have a proper cross sill :)
When me and my dad were building it we made the back one piece.

I am redoing it. Cut off both rear quarter panels and the metal that was in place of the cross sill.
Welded on new panels and a new cross sill.

I'm actually doing a bunch of things to the CJ7 before i hand it off to my son.
One of those things was redoing the back and installing a proper tailgate.
I also am installing a new rear bumper that has a swinging tire carrier. Its the Rugged Ridge XHD set.

For some reason i can't find any tailgate hardware for a swinging tailgate. Just the kinds that drop the tailgate down is what i found.
Can anyone help me with finding the swinging tailgate hardware?
Or do you guys think i should just go with the drop down kind? I do guess the dropdown would be fine. And a lot less work.

I have 4 vehicles. My driveway is packed.
can’t work on anything for too long in the driveway. Even though I’m not in a HOA, city rules don’t allow it. And I have gotten the stupid warning before taped to my garage door.
Can’t have a commercial vehicle, boat, “broken vehicle”, RV, etc in the driveway.
Soon as I’m done with the CJ I can clean the garage. For now it is what it is 😆
I have 1/3 acre and a lot of it is enclosed pool/hot tub, and a large shed. Not really much space.

Got the 6” Quadratec fender flares in.
I think I’m going to rivet them in instead of using the hardware that comes with it.
Pneumatic riveter ftw 🙌
Wow - that's going to be a LOT of fender flare, since you have NarrowTrac axles.

I freaken HATE HOAs - just a bunch of power-hungry Karens imposing their will on their neighbors. Yeah, so you've got a bunch of stuff in the garage - so what. Even without its headlights, I'd wager your Jeep still looks nicer than a good many of the other cars in the neighborhood.

My old "stock type"flares were too small.
I have 33x12.5 tires.
I think these flares will look great :)

Besides this CJ is going to my son. Will be his first vehicle.
I never had a chance to use much it before.
Engine has maybe $3k miles on it since it was rebuilt years ago.

He will at least use it and it won’t go to waste.
If he wants wide axles that’s something he can do later :)

Those Dick Cepeks should hold their own in the soup, but if you ever find yourself wanting to never get stuck again, I can honestly say those TSXs are diggers. I used to be able to do nice leisurely donuts in the mud, and only got 'stuck' once with the Cooper STTs that my Jeep originally came [to me] with. Once I installed the Swampers though - I couldn't get stuck even if I'd tried. Even the Side-Biters would grab onto the sides of ruts and dig their way to freedom. I even almost "traction rolled it" one time trying to drift in the mud and the tires just kept grabbing.

I'm sure you and your son are going to have a lot of fun with it, no matter where you decided to drive it.

It helps it has a AX15 transmission with a DANA300 modded dual stick xfer case.
No fancy lockers either just good old locking hubs 😆

Every time I go to Ocala or the beach.
Need to stop, jump out, lock the hubs. And when I’m out, same. Stop, jump out, unlock the hubs…

While everyone in their new jeeps are thinking “just press the button” what is this guy doing?
Then I laugh when they get stuck with their stock tires.

And tbh it’s rare I even need to go into 4WD. These tires handle my area well even in 2WD.

Would be nice if we had some rocks to climb here. If any do exist it’s a man made course. Not the same.

Best off roading I ever did was in Aruba. Rented a manual YJ, went out to the natural pool. Went off the path.
Was great!! Would have been better if I was able to do that in my CJ…

So with these quadratec 6" flares it does look like it needs some cutting into the fenders (front and back).
Not too much, but if i dont cut there will be excess under the flare.
They also do require all new holes. Which is fine. Will drill out the 3/16 holes and rivet them in.

I need to find some pics to make sure im aligning them right. I dont want to make a mistake i cant undo without replacing the entire fender...

A little excess under the flair should be ok..........yes? Wont see it unless you stick your head under the flair to notice......I would think anyway.

Here are some pics of the rear bumper installed with tire carrier.
Still needs a little adjusting and tightening. And still need to install the hitch. But basically there.

Yes i know its a mess. I'm in the middle of several projects besides this one. Dont judge :)
