So i for awhile i have really needed a new muffler and trap for my tailpipe, i stopped into the local muffler shop and the guy said a magnaflow is probably the best sounding one, my question is what does ever one else think of them on the 4.2l or 4.0 engines and also how do glass backs sound on them?
thanks
john

When my stock muffler blew out I put on a Dynomax cat back. It started to annoy me with all the noise so I replaced the muffler with a new Magnaflow someone gave me. It was a little quieter but still to noisy for me. The deceleration noise and constant rumbling got to me. I took it of and replaced it with a stock type muffler and I am happy now. Some people love it some hate it. I saw now power difference with any of the mufflers.

6 months or so ago I put on a Magnaflow Cat, and a Dynomax muffler. I found it to only be marginally different from the existing muffler, a little bit deeper, but not loud at all. I really don't care for loud exhaust and am very happy with this combination.

stock replacement tailpipes are a pretty good noise supresser too. the factory one was ok becasue it was mandrel bent but the cheap replacements from advance or autozone have those accordian bends in them which I think restrict flow and quiet it down quite a bit. I have a jba header a high flow cat and a super 40 and it sounded better but not really much louder than stock.(I had just put on a cheap autozone tailpipe since the rest of the exhaust was new) Six months later that tailpipe was half rotten and the rear hanger cracked off it so I bought a dynomax mandrel bent tailpipe... A bit pricey IMO at about 100 bucks it made a big difference in the way my jeep sounds and I felt improvement on the butt dyno. Just sayyin if your going throght the trouble of putting on a good muffler the tailpipe has alot to do with the sound as well and its a good time to replace it.

For two years I have been running a glass pack, and it finally drove me nuts. Damn thing sounded like a Cessna (read: small aircraft) on take off. The jeep is down at the shop today getting a new Cherry Bomb muffler, their version of a high performance muffler. I will neither confirm nor deny the existence of a cat on my Off Road Jeep.
