As usual my sense of scale being so utterly messed up has caused problems. So i changed my oil and over filled it. Not alot mind you but on the stick it seems to be up to/just below the D on "DO NOT OVERFILL" now after i did this it sounds different especially on startup. Is there anything bad that will come out of this or will it just be something i can live with. And before people say, no, it won't burn off. my XJ does NOT burn oil in the slightest.

Not great to drive with in that condition.

a friend of mine who is not mechanically minded let his wife check the oil and to top it up, she believes she knows how to own a car. He came round to my house with smoke billowing out of the exhaust, I guess it was pushing up past the rings. I took about 3 pints out from the drain, smoking stopped. A lucky escape, no lasting damage.

As his wife had previously had his car fixed so it ran on three cylinders, not four, to avoid replacing the blown engine or buying a new car,,,,, well, you can see why you would be concerned.

Point of story - even if someone you trust puts in the oil, check it yourself and then remind yourself why you should have trust issues.
