Tonight I was doin a little bit of muddin with a buddy of mine who has a 4Runner 4x4. He decided to powerbrake his truck in water in 2 wheel drive, once hes done with that he puts in 4 and the front sinks, he's done.

So I decide that instead of turning my Jeep around (I was facing him watching the retard get himself stuck) I decided to hook my snatch rope up to my tow hooks and give him a yank.

I got myself about 2 feet of slack and easily gave him a really easy hit just to see how stuck he was, well apparently the frame of our Jeeps arne't that strong cause I kept goin in reverse but my bumper, driving lights, bumper brackets, tow hook brackets and tow hooks didn't. It just tore the metal of the frame.

Needless to say I turned around and hooked up in the back and after a couple of good snatches I got him out. After a good laugh we called it a night.

Anyways, now I'm bumperless and thinkin about a nice upgrade to the front end. Any ideas? First I am going to weld some nice think plates of steel to the end of the frame to strengthen that up a bit. But who makes a nice strong bumper that you guys are happy with? Ant input would be great.

First of all, when you installed the tow hooks, what did you attach them to? You can't simply bolt the hook to the frame or that will happen. You need a mounting bracket between the hook and frame for proper support.

Now you can upgrade!

I've been doing A LOT of research on front bumpers lately and there are a lot of nice ones out there. My top 3 choices (for my likes) are:

Hanson - can be bought through BigOffroad
Custom 4x4 Fabrication
and a custom bumper by Carolina Rock Shop

Just in case you don't have the cash to drop on a new one and go back to the factory bumper.

I eventually want to go this route because I'll never put a winch on and there just isn't enough rocks or mud (not to mention funds!) to require me to upgrade to a bada$$ bumber yet.

EricsXJ,

As mentioned in the first post, the tow hook brackets ripped off too. I was running the Tonken brackets. Those are fine.

Thanks for the other replys, I will check out those bumpers.

Eric, i cant believe you found Carolina Rock Shop way out there in Oregon. I live like 100 yds from the shop and man those guys are great. They were the ones who did my lift and everything. Customer service is good and there fabricated bumpers are awesome. I dont have one but the people that do are really happy. Thanks for putting the word out for that good group of guys.

 Do those Tomken brackets reach back (9" or so)to that additional hole in the frame-rail?

speaking of how great carolina rock shop is... i bought a bumper off them and i live in pittsburgh and andy said chances are he or someone who works there will drive my bumper up to pittsburgh from north carolina. granted they arent making a special trip but you wont find too many companies who will hand deliver something.
