Running Great, died suddenly. Fuel pump?

94 2.5 liter. Changed the fuel filter and a broken fuel line earlier this week. After that, it has been running better than ever. Today, I drove it probably 15 miles to my parents house. I started it up to leave, it started fine then died after 5 seconds. Now it will not start. It is turning over the starter fine. It seems as though it is not getting gas.

1)What are the symptoms of a fuel pump?
2)Where is it located?
3)How can I test it?

Any other thoughts would be helpful.

1)Your Jeep wont run.:D
2)It should be in the gas tank.
3)get under the Jeep by the tank and have a helper turn the key to run you should hear the pump run for a sec. before it turns off.

If its running it might not be the problem. I would stick a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel injector rail and see if you have the right pressure (39 PSI I think).

Then if you feel brave I would dump a TINY bit of raw gas down the TB as its cranking. Rember a Tiny Bit or fire and death! If it starts with the gas then its not getting fuel.

Turn the key on but dont start it. Do you hear the fuel pump prime itself? Have someone stand at the tailgate, they should hear it if its working. It will only run a few seconds.

If you dont hear it, hit the bottom of your gas tank. Not hard like your punting a football football though.

Check all of your fuses. Make sure you didnt knock off the ground wire. Its on a little stud on your e brake pedal.

For a sudden death I would look at the fuel pump relay.
Turn the key to the run position, (Don't crank the engine) you should be able to hear the pump run for a second or two to prime. If you don't hear anything, check the relay. If you don't hear anything, check the relay and fuses. If the relay and fuses check out then start thinking about the fuel pump.

I know its not recommended but i had a chevy truck and i was told to try and put gas into where the carb was after that ran out my truck shut off. thats how we knew... A friend of mine went under the truck with a hammer and tapped the tank where the pump was and it worked for almost 3 months after. like i said though not recommended but it worked to get home.

Update:

I had only assumed I was getting fire and of course last night it was late and dark when I was trying to fix the YJ. Today, as Shaggyjim suggested, I introduced fuel into the TB and nothing. Then to further investigate the firing issue, I pulled the coil wire to the cap. When I did, the top of the cap crumbled. After removing the cap, the rotor had broken into pieces. I am assuming everything had overheated in there as it smelled of hot plastic. Anyway, I put my old cap and rotor on (luckily I always keep the one I replace as backup). Anyway, started immediately.

Thanks Again!!!!
