96 xj 4.0 ho, 176k lower engine knock, sounds like lifters but different, gets louder letting off throttle or at idle sounds like mix of metal on metal/ power stroke ford.... tightened flexplate bolts last year and it didn't help, so its the motor making the noise although i do regular oil changes there is not a file of metal in the pan...

thinking if i do the lifters might as well do rings, hone, and rod bearings and hoping the crank is ok

ill upload a video so the noise is heard...

Now that its fall again in upstate NY the jeep is back in action and the geo metro is put away the XJ is prowling months of on and off use the 4.0 waiting for winter.

Now I know I didn't post a video like I said I would. Now with these marvelous iPhones I can post within seconds and plan on doing so today to show you guys the 96 and her noises.

possibly a piston skirt? I had that same noise in my tj, and that's what it was. the chunks were in the oil pan, but all of them were too large to come out the drain hole. the noise would actually go away when on throttle at a certain rpm. let off the gas and it came back.
