i just finished stripping down a 1987 302 and I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with it. I know its going into my TJ at some point and I'm looking to get about 300hp and around the same amount of torque. The jeep would still be my DD and weekend wheeler(mostly mud). im looking for reliability. I've been playing with the idea of a 331 stroker, but im afraid that it might weaken the cylinder walls too much and would not be too reliable with how i want to use it. The 331 would give me my desired power and i wouldnt have to spend too much on other performance components until i had the money and stronger drivetrain to handle the extra power. So... 331 and done? or stick with the 302 and work on heads, cam, lifters, pushrods, intake, etc...

Not on the street if he doesn't have the right place to get it inspected. Most emission stuff is federal, doesn't matter where you live.

Provided it meets the same year emmisions I think anything is go, like say, put a 2000 chevy ls engine in it, or something, but it has to have all the junk on it too I think.

Do it!

I am thinking about swapping a 302 into my son's Ranger. I figure while I'm in there doing the rebuild, why not stroke it. So I say, do it! Then move outta Jersey if they are that dadgum particular. Geez, the Founding Fathers never meant for government to be in our lives to that extent!
As for thinning the cylinder walls, you can go .030 on just about anything without a thought. .060 is starting to push it a bit.

IIRC, the 331 has the same bore as the 302 (3.000"). So I wouldn't think thin cylinder walls would be an issue. I would definitely consider the stroker, as it will allow you to get more hp/torque, esp at lower rpms where you're jeep will need it. Don't know anyone who has ran a 331 so can't comment on the reliability tho. maybe someone else will chime in.

Why not do the 347 kit?? its much more popular in the 302 world.

well a buddy of mine was going to sell a 331 kit for 1500 bones so not bad(Scat series 9000 with alloy pistons). O and everything on the block is being replaced. no original parts will be reused besides the heads. and if its still a problem with inspection, ill just pay for private. by that time ill be out of jersey anyway. plus im afraid the 347 would force me to replace most of my driveline, BUT. I may have to do that anyway.

personally i would pick up 97.5 and newer explorer engine with gt40p heads put an e 303 cam with edlebrock double roller timing chain a 76mm c+l mass air and run it off an a9l mass air computer. Wait that is what i am doing sorry
