TX CJ5 Restore- 304 Shudder at Takeoff - Clutch Chatter and More

I'm updating this thread, lot of steps. So my CJ5 feels like a Saturn 5 on takeoff on a hill especially. If I Rev higher RPMs it smooths it some. Feels like the Jeep will come apart, ugh.

so step one was to fix the rear drive shaft get a double Cardan. Did that, and 50% correction maybe. Needed it, had another thread on that, but it was well worth it and needed.

So reading what it can be, from front to back:
1. Bad Motor Mounts (Mine are bad)
2. Leaking Oil fouling flywheel/clutch (mine leaks, looks like pan and RMS at minimum)
3. Flywheel scorched/warped (My fly wheel scorched now that I see it, big time)
4. Wallowed pilot bushing (Mine is now that I see it)
5. Loose Bell Housing Bolts (Mine weren't....BUT...my bell housing had a crack, big one, super nice.
6. Bad trans Mount and Torque bar (Mine was wasted and the torque bracket bent and bolt and bushings melted to crap)
7. Incorrect Drive Shaft, doesn't have Double Cardan DS but the perches on the axle are welded to have them point at the TC output. So this needs a new DC DS.

So started looking to make a plan (I’m weird, will lay on crawler and just look and think options).

This trans Mount, whatever this 1 bolt item is, don’t know the official name, on Jeepsterman it looks like Stud and Insulator.

That’s looks like toast, not sure what a good one looks like, and I can hand spin the washers under the nut under the skid, so pretty sure that does little to nothing.

Also, there is oil all over at the RMS location. It blows all over, so it can be other leaks, but looks to me that the block is clean and not real wet above near the valve covers, so not an issue.

I feel like a RMS, Clutch job with resurfacing flywheel and new trans mounts are the next phase. Look about right to y’all?

Parents weekend at Texas, but still got home Sunday to do a few things.

got the clutch on, the bell housing on, the shields and starter and also put the cross member back under the oil pan.

I want to clean the super dirty transmission and TC before I get them in since not travelling this week.

Clutch plate and tool fit no issue (and yes, double checked the "flywheel side" was correct, ha.)

Pressure plate went on no issue, and made sure the tool still went in and out smooth.

Had an issue with the bell housing. One of the sleeves on the right was squeezed tight, large bottom right wouldn't through had to pull it and get that stretched and went on well.
Have to grab a larger 7/16-14 grade 8 for the bottom left and get that on, it was missing when I pulled it.

Got the starter and check plate on as well as the clutch linkage bracket. I painted the pan and dust and check plates and all the bolts black.

Since I mentioned it, daughter’s ZTA Parents weekend, my good friend got us great tickets, ha.

“Hangman” Glen Powell is a Longhorn, and my wife asked, so he used her phone and got the ladies a selfie, ha.

Pretty good view of South Endzone, there were seats up higher too.

So, with the Bell Housing up, I need to get the T176 and Dana 300 cleaned up.

Like a lot of videos I see, these were absolutely covered in thick dirt and mud mixed with some type of oil. Kudos to previous Jeep owners for at least using the Jeep, ha.

After scraping, I got Purple Power degreaser on it and then used the electric power washer. Got it pretty good, will come back with a drill and skinny wire cup for some corners and try to get it as clean as possible.
Getting it clean, I spotted a missing cover bolt.
Nice.

I pulled a bolt, went to Ace and got one with a flat and lock, as it was a touch long, the flat to even the length.

I am not 100% if any of this leaked. There is crap everywhere. SO....my plan, kind of the lazy one I feel, is to clean this really well, and put it back in with full fluid. I've changed the Dana 300 recently, I know it's got good gear oil, will top it off. Fill the T176, yeah it was more starved than I thought, so it'll get a full fill when installed.

Then, run it and see if there are leaks. Ones I can actually track and figure out...not just oily mud from wherever.

Got a little wire wheeling to do and hopefully get this back on the CJ this week.

Ha, I tried to get it in as one unit....oof, could not get it done. Thought I had it, was working by myself, and decided not to waste a ton of time. I'm separating the TC and Transmission, and will make a go at it. If not, I'll get a friend over, ha. The joys of stabbing a transmission.
