What kind of oil do you use?

do you just grab the cheapest or do you always use synthetic?

does the kind of filter you use really matter?

I religiously used Valvoline conventional for the last 20 yrs. Here lately Advanced Auto has had synthetic on sale for like $22 for 5 qts and filter. I've since switched to synthetic either Mobil one or the major brands that they may have on sale.

I am still using the same filter I always have; Purolator.

Castrol

All synthetic versions of it and I use 10W-30 in my 3.8 to help with burning oil on cold starts. I go anywhere from 6-10k miles on oil changes depending how it's driven. I find Castrol is best to quiet the motor down, Valvoline and Mobil 1 give a slightly smoother running motor...

Mobil 1 10W-30 Synthetic. Fram XTRA Guard filter. Change oil & oil filter, clean air filter, and rotate tires every 5000 miles.

Amsoil XL. I no longer get the lifter clatter I use to get with Mobile 1 or Dino oil. (With the same make/model oil filter).

Chrysler has been in bed with SOPUS for a few years. Before that it was Exxon-Mobil. (And briefly with Valvoline in between, I believe).

There's a good deal right on the new GTL pennzoils. You get 20¢ off per gallon of shell gas for every quart of oil you buy. Up to 20 gallons per purchase. So a $25 5-quart jug of oil can save you $20 on your next fill up. Not bad.

And I'm a loyal M1 user!

I bought a 12 pack (good for four years) for 145.00 - at 12.00 per oil change the ease of just rolling in every four months and having it done more than pays for that...

I'm just pointing out that relative to the other expenses of jeep ownership, oil changes are not bad.

For a rough example: A tank of gas is $50-60. So is an oil change. You change oil about every 20 tanks of gas. So oil should be only 5% or less of what you spend on gas. And that's over simplified assuming 5,000 mile oil changes. Assuming two oil changes per year, the cost is $120. Forty tanks of gas is about $2000-2400 (about 10k miles). These are just rough estimates.

Look at tires, say a set of 5 tires (plus TPMS sensors) last for 6 years. At $300 times 5 tires/sensors divided by 6 years, the "cost" of tires is $250 per year. Twice what oil changes cost. More if you ruin a tire or whatever.

So other than the cost of the vehicle, the costs of owning the vehicle are, in descending order, fuel, insurance, tires, oil, etc. Not including non-warranty failures and stuff that breaks from wheeling or general maintenance stuff that has to accompany aging vehicles (brakes, fluids, plugs/wires, coolant changes, etc.).

When you think about it all, the oil and windshield wipers are like a bargain!

I am curious how you like the 0W-40. I used that in my VW Beetle since I got it several years ago and noticed that car burned oil (about 3/4 quart per 5k miles). I switched to Castrol Dino for that car and it no longer burns any. It is actually that very oil that turned me off on synthetics.

I have been using castrol gtx since I replaced my engine, the mobil 1 didn't help my first engine last any longer or get better gas mileage. I figured the dino has been fine for everything else I have owned so I wasn't going to spend extra on expensive synthetic. That's been my experience.

I went to the dealership every 3k miles as long as it was under warranty and paid $60 for 4 oil changes. No clue what they used.

Now that I'm doing my own, I'm using synthetic and going 7k miles between changes if I'm not off-road much, but I'll probably switch to 5k miles during the summer months when I'm doing a lot of slow crawling.
