Why is there a giant puddle of water in my XJ?

Hopefully someone knows where this leak came from.

I drive a 94XJ and when I got in it this morning I heard a watery sound as my feet hit the flooring. I looked down and there was a mini lake on the carpet. I checked everywhere to see if I could find where the leak was coming from and couldn't find the source. The weird thing is is that it's only on the drivers side.

Anyone had a similar problem?

I had a similar problem, but mine was leaking on both sides - turned out my windshield was leaking and had to be re-sealed. There are other possibilites as well - bad weatherstripping, a hole rotted in the floorboard ... you might do a search as well. Good luck!

May I assume that the puddle is definitely water (rainwater) & not engine coolant? (On some cars, when the heater core goes bad it will dump coolant into the cabin, usually right above someone's feet -- the driver's or the passenger's)

I have heard of a very common leak above the driver's-side front door. You might find info about it by searching the forum. Also, if you find you need to replace the door seals, check out www.madxj.com for info on how to do that (in the "Technical" page, the section on "Body" stuff).

Sorry about the problem. Good luck fixin' it.

It's not coolant so im lucky on that one.

The doors don't leak and still hold a good seal even when doing creek crossings, so it's not the doors.

It could be the windshield but i need to check into that more. I felt around under the dash a little bit when i was driving and didn't feel any water. It shouldn't cost that much to get the windshield re-sealed, should it?

I'll try the hose thing later when i get home.

My windshield leaks too. One of my buddies who has worked in paint and body for years told me that it's very hard to get the windsheild out of an XJ without breaking the glass to replace the sealing.

That happened to me - the glass broke when they went to take it out - had to get a new windshield.

I know mine was loose - you could actually push the base of the windshield out by a 1/4 inch almost!

Well it's getting ready to piss rain again in good ole southern california so i'll try and find the source.

Ok so i think i figured out how this is happening.

It was raining yet again this morning. I got in and checked and there was no water on the floor. I started it up and headed to work. Once i got to work i noticed that once again, my carpet is soaked.

So from what i gathered the water is leaking in from under the XJ. Could this be a hole or something? I have no idea how i would go about fixing this, but then again i haven't seen the actual hole. Hopefully i can check it out before it gets dark.

sounds like a hole in your floor, like you say -- I've seen it before, but not on the driver's side -- what you're looking for is a patch where you can see the bottom of your carpet (if you poke at it, it will be squishy :p )

Usually this happens on the passenger side just above the exhaust . . . maybe the hole you're looking for will be near where the exhaust bends around underneath the engine/transmission bellhousing?

Fixing it shouldn't be too bad. I imagine you just get some sheet metal & weld it in there (after clearing the surrounding rust, of course) then paint it, & maybe weather-proof coat it.

Cool, thanks for the advice.

one more thing & I'll get out of the way

here's what I was thinking of, in terms of repairing the floor, if in fact you do have a hole there (similar operation, helpful info to know before starting the project):

shouldn't be too difficult, especially if you know someone with a welder. It amuses me that the authors of the article recommend not setting the carpet on fire (they're helpful chaps).

I had an extreme case of leaking in my 87. One thing to look for as well is the well nuts for the roofrack, if you have one. Once I replaced them, my cabin has been dry ever since. btw if you need to replace them Dealer cost is about $4.50, I found them online for $8.50, so this was one instance where it actually paid off going to the stealership.
