What problems should i expect if i buy a CRD? I see alot of crd's going to the dealer for EGR valves, and i saw one guy having problems with the tranny. Is the egr valve something that i would have to visit the dealer all the time? I am really close on buying a crd, just some this things kind of worry me a little.

The important thing is that you are happy with your rig and have fun driving it. Just remember to smile real big when you go by all those misguided souls who bought non-Jeep suvs:D
Thanks Blue! Have a Happy New Year, and be safe!

Man, for 41 you have a lot to learn. Look at you talking about "Mr big man behind his keyboard" then you talk about putting me on my ***? What a hypocrite. FYI, I am 27, married and I am ex-military, 1/31st FA Fort Sill. I highly doubt I'd be put on my *** by a trash talking old man. Am I going to drive to Tampa, no why would I waste my time? Maybe I can hang out with your fishing buddies, woo-hoo.

You don't care if someone buys a CRD? Then why do you post in every CRD thread touting how great your 3.7 is? Who gives a crap? Why don't you stick to your 3.7 threads then?

Also, what is so hard about driving an automatic? What makes your "driving technique" so much better? Do you push the pedal down in your own special way? Maybe your magical fairy drives for you?

We don't just buy the CRD for fuel mileage, we buy it for many other reasons outlined previously. You will never prove your mileage claims. Stick with your own threads.

what are the bad egr symptoms? Our CRD stutters a little after hard excelleration then letting off the accelerator.
That's the only problem I have had (that I didn't do to it).

Oil changes are expensive ($70 @ dealer see other threads).

It's noisier when it's cold, and the fuel economy in the winter doesn't pay off with diesel prices the way they have been lately. I averaged 22-24 in the summer, now it's like 18-20.

The torque is marvelous. I pull a 27' ultra light camper with it and it beats the pants off of the 2002 and 2004 KJ's I've driven. If you venture off road, the torque is great for climbing also, you creep up as slow as you want to.

If you're 27 and ex-military, then it's highly likely that you'd kick my azz after I whacked you for calling me a liar in public... but I'd still do it in the hopes that you'd learn SOMETHING from the experience... even knowing that I was going to take a beating afterward.

Funny.... if you'd read my posts more carefully... with a little less bias about your beloved CRD, you'd see that I ALSO post that I think the CRD is an excellent engine.... so chill.... I'm not saying your ride sucks.. just that the 3.7L is ALSO a pretty damn good engine IMO..... knock on wood (just passed 10K miles week before last).

There's nothing special about my driving technique... go to the LOST forum and read under the mileage threads where I've taken the time to write extensively what to try to do, and look for, while driving to maximize your mileage... I'm not going to re-post it here again right now unless you're asking me specifically to.

Luis

ps. My hat's off to you for serving in the Military (many of my relatives have... some still do)... believe it or not I have the greatest respect for those people who have the 'nads to put their life on the line for our way of life here, and even though we may disagree about some other things, if you're ever in the area, let me know and I'll buy you a round of whatever you like, wherever you like, to show you that I'm serious about appreciating your service to our country...... but it doesn't mean that I'll let you disrespect me in public just because you're tougher than I am, and I think you'll maybe understand that when you reach my age.

pps. go back, re-read, and you'll see that YOU'RE the one who STARTED the "trash talking".... not me... my parents taught me to treat everybody else with respect... at least until they showed me that they were unable to return the favor.

To the originator of this thread....

Don Spiro, I apologize for hi-jacking your thread... to answer the question that you posted in the beginning... go ahead and buy the CRD (or the 3.7L)... it's a great engine and you won't be going wrong with it. It is my OPINION that Jeep has worked out pretty much any problems they had with earlier versions of both the CRD and the 3.7L engines. Just don't buy the 4 cyl gasser... it's simply underpowered IMO.

Tell you what, for what it's worth, eeking out 19MPG in the 3.7 is impressive. It is however a little hard to believe, I hope you understand why. To show that I too respect people, I will read your tips thread and impart that wisdom to my friends. I will even report my findings here. Also, I never said the 3.7 is a poor engine, as a matter of fact I have heard great things about it's performance. I have also heard and seen that it is fairly below average on fuel mileage. At the end of the day, we both drive nice vehicles. Sorry for any hostilities, have a happy new year.

Some random observations...

Our CRD gave us great mileage on some mostly-highway trips (26-27mph). It's only got 2000 miles on the clock so far. That is pretty impressive.

On around-town driving with winter diesel, we just clocked a tank at 16.5mpg. This is mostly running errands around town. That's not as high as I'd like, although I recognize that the CRD is a heavy vehicle and the diesel has a higher fuel penalty for short trips than the gasoline engine does (warm-up A/F mixture, viscous heater). Given the same driving pattern, I think the gasser would be doing better right now.

I've read Tightwadsjeeper's posts about improving fuel economy through driving technique, and he is spot-on with all his recommendations. Over the past 15 years, I've developed a driving style which pretty much mirrors his, and I tend to get better mileage than average on every vehicle I drive. It's just common-sense stuff about maintaining momentum, minimizing braking, and maximizing drivetrain efficiency. I think he is just defending the 3.7L's ability to get reasonable mileage when driven with that intent in mind. I bet he'd work wonders with a 6-speed CRD too. :)

While I think the 3.7L would be nicer right now in some respects (better short-trip economy, no cool-down waits), I would still choose a CRD if I had to make the choice again. If it were primarily a city commuter vehicle with the occasional weekend trip thrown in, the decision would be a little more difficult. It seems like if you can squeeze some highway driving in with the CRD, you'll get some good mileage on that tank. If not, then the numbers I've been seeing are more comparable with the 3.7L numbers I've seen - again, only with 2000 miles on the odometer right now.

Oh yeah, and the KJ is an AWESOME city vehicle. The visibility is excellent, and I can swing 135 degrees around into an angled parking spot on the other side of a narrow city street!

Thank you. Apology accepted and returned. I understand that it is hard to believe, especially since my wife has the same difficulty that most other drivers do... but it CAN be done.... you just have to learn to maximize the 3.7L's advantages, and adjust your driving style to get the most from it. I agree, your CRD is a VERY nice vehicle as well.

I wish you a happy New Year's too, and I assure you that there are no hard feelings on my end.

Everybody please drive very safely this weekend, and I look forward to seeing all of you on here next year!!

ps. I'm deadly serious about that offer for a drink, if you're ever down here in the Tampa area.... or if you can find the time... I'll be glad to take you out fishing on my boat.

Thanks Chrispitude! I too have often wondered just how many mpg I could eek out of a CRD myself... :D Maybe I'll get the chance someday.
