you don't need soa but it all depends on how much fender yu are willing to cut. I run 36 inch sx's with 4 inch sua. I could easily run 38s aswell. But i am into keeping my jeep as low and stable as possible
True, but most of us are not willing to cut up a DD. I would if I had a second vehicle.

4" suspension plus SOA and a little bit of fender trimmin' will give you room for 38" tires - skip the fender trimmin' and run 37" tires.

Or 4" suspension plus 3" body and some fender trimming will give you room .. but I personally hate stilts on a Jeep.

4" SUA Lift with a 2 or 3" Body... with Tj Flares for 37's, 38's is pushing it... altho 6" SUA & 2" Body... National Springs would be the one to contact about the Springs... there Custom made

or a smaller lift of the above & cut some sheetmetal like BigYj mentioned.. Cutting fenders isnt all that bad , if your Jeep is a Daily driver... you can easily trim 1 -2" out of the Flares alone & that helps
what people seem to think that those rinky dink flares do oh so much.. they dont do squat... if you crawl off in a mudhole & you have your top & doors off, YOU ARE GOING TO GET HIT WITH CRAP & if not that, about 3" of your windshield will be covered on the inside on each side of the frame... i took my flares off wanted to see if there was a difference... NOPE same thing... so i didnt run them anymore!

SOA, with Add-a-leafs & Stock springs, or1.5" -2.5" Lift springs will do the trick with Tj Flares < if you must> & maybe a 1" body

one thing to remember about a SOA, Springs dont last long especially arched springs...couple of freinds of mine did this set up & they replace the springs once a yr... but mind you they wheel the crap out of there Jeeps

if he is wanting 37s or 38s then he must be a wheeler. so i think he should go soa with a rancho add a leaf and competition cut the fenders. that way you have alot of clearance and a low center of grav. and it looks bad azz!
