I did helicoil on my hardtop hinge ( swapped back in the factory hinge) but for some reason my gap is back. Ill try again . View attachment 4335511 View attachment 4335512
I believe that the hinge is the problem. The hinge "flats"...the ends of it that come off of the center angle, should be parallel to each other. The top "flat" has been pulled out, so it does not allow the top of the lift gate to set back against the hard top.

The top flat has to be bent forward more...

Must be cooling off at your place by the looks of the jacket. Your paint buffing and wax really turned out nice. Someone took pretty good care of your Jeep in the years before you got it.

If thats the case thpugh. Why didnt the aftermarket ( albeit crappy hinge ) correct it.

I don't know....just looking at that last picture, it looks kind of obvious that that hinge is out of whack.

Maybe when that hinge got deformed, the lift gate got deformed along with it. Like someone really over lifted at one time, moreso on the right side.

agear, can I make a suggestion? Remove the rear hatch completely via the inner part of the hinge (from underneath hinge from top). Then grab 4 matching bolts that have the same thread pitch as the inner hinge bolts but longer; an inch or two. Just by looking at those bolts once screwed in, do you noticed them off in any way or are they all leveled the same? This should give you an idea if the hinge within the fiberglass is tweaked. Do the same for the bolts on the hatch itself. If off, try tweaking them into realignment.

At night it is getting pretty cool. Theonly thing I found that the PO did that I did not approve of was the wiring for his driving lamps.

Glenn, what did your better half make for dinner?
Pork, Rice, Corn on the cob.

Well i remember it happening by chance. What happened was the hinge froze so it was staying in place itself while i pulled forced down the hatch. . I dont know to be continued…. I gotta do something real quick

update so i think the hinge froze and was also binding on the strut and so it just ripped the strut bracket right off the hardtop. Mainly i think the hinge froze. But the combo of things i was thinking caused me to bend the hatch / liftgate in the area of the hinge and top edge of hatch

im still open to suggestions snd in the meantime im gonna hammer down thin top edge of the hatch .

remove all and dont put back on till hinges work cleanly ................................(y)quit fighting things

Drove it 480 miles diagonally across Missouri from Kansas…

Washed Willy, checked tire pressures, gathered up things to take to Jeep Explosion

I'll check fluids tomorrow or Friday

According to the weather channel --- 3 days out, Morning Showers...GREAT! I will have to

take the gun off and snatch the cradle and tray off so I can erect Willy's Top to maybe keep

me a little dry.....Maybe by Saturday there won't be any rain predicted????

Then I have a 70 mile drive at 45-50 MPH to the Jeep Explosion Event

The left side is correct? If so, could you remove the hinge from the right side (entirely), set the lift gate in its correct position. Find a way to hold it there... i.e.Gorilla Tape, etc.

Then, modify/bend the hinge to fit it properly?

Rich

EDIT...I just realized that I repeated what Jeepersid said......

Its the right side passenger side that doesnt seal correct. . Let me see what was said about gorilla tape.

Holy crap batman........the radio you are installing......gave you a miswire message?
So now we do not need an installation book, just start touching wires together, and the device will tell you correct or wrong?
I really really REALLY want to move off grid ssssoooooooo bad :/

Drove it from Sikeston Mo to Cades Cove entrance of Great Smokie Mountain National Park, about 420 miles across Kentucky and Tennessee
